Land mark: locating the church within the landscape exploring the location, the design, the construction and the evidence of use over the years – ephemera and furnishings, in a series of drawings which will form an installation in the church.

The Romney Marsh Churches are powerful symbolic visual landmarks that resonate with the history of human occupation of the surrounding countryside over many decades. For this commission we will create a series of drawings of Newchurch from different distances, perspectives and approaches. The drawings will be posted on Google Maps and installed as part of the fabric of the church.

This process of investigation is the starting point for creating a collaborative piece of work, the outcome of which is as yet to be discovered. Although this work focuses on Newchurch we hope that it relates to all of the churches in terms of ‘sense of place’ or ‘genius loci’

During 2 weekends of the festival we will be in residence working.

ONE TWO ONE Art and Architecture was founded in 2004 by Elise Liversedge and Mary Hooper. We use our combined disciplines and experience of design and contemporary arts practice in a collaborative way undertaking Public Art commissions.

We feel that the nature of a space or place, and the way it is both used and perceived is of paramount importance. Our approach is to explore how the nature of a site specific piece of public art develops within the context of a given site, and how a sense of identity can be re-invigorated by creating a visible palimpsest of the changing culture and use of a place with such a rich history.
