The sea below our feet

I am one of the organisers of this year’s art in romney marsh project and my interest in the marsh: it’s history and unique qualities continue to inspire me and to give me great pleasure. I have produced an installation which marks the passing of time and celebrates the Romney marsh churches and their close proximity to the sea.

Whenever I visit the marsh, I feel continually reminded of the proximity to the English Channel, it might be the call of a herring gull, a dropped mussel shell and the saline smell and seasalt taste in the air. I want to bring the textures, forms and shapes of the reclaimed land, coast and saltmarsh together in the sanctuary of the church and its churchyard. I am making a personal representation of objects, shapes and forms that I find around me and that signify to me the passing of time and human mortality. I want to breathe life into the materials and subjects in order to change perceptions and interpretations of what we see around us.
